My Carey family tree starts in the past and works its way to the present. It begins with the Vikings in Norway and Denmark and the Franks in Germany and France. It then moves to England and finishes in the United States. This site includes videos as I walk in the footsteps of my ancestors.

Count of Maerc

Normandy, France

These four videos are from Rouen, France, and the surrounding area. This first one begins with scenes along the Seine River from Paris to Rouen. It then moves to sites around the town of Rouen including houses, cathedrals, and the Hotel Bonaparte and ends with Rollon’s statue, the runic stone from Denmark, and the surrounding park .

http://youtu.be/4duUUGcuUqk

This video continues with Rollon’s statue and the surrounding park. It also includes a statue of Napoleon and then moves to the tower or dungeon where Joan of Arc was kept. The tower is not of Rollon’s time but occupies a strategic spot where his headquarters could have been.

http://youtu.be/tYnavV0SRKI

This third video continues with the tower. It was built by Philippe-Auguste around 1205 and so would not have been part of Rollon’s headquarters. Rollon was too early for this type of structure. The video then moves to the cathedral where Rollon’s femur is buried. His body was scattered by his enemies; and his grandson Richard I, third Duke of Normandy, moved his body to Fecamp where Richard’s father, William Longsword, second Duke of Normandy, had moved the capital. Also buried here are the hearts of William Longsword, Rollon’s son; Richard the Lionheart, King of England; and Richard the Lionheart’s brother-in-law Henry the Lion. Last is the Rouen train station.

http://youtu.be/AIct9kGbHNg

This last video starts at the train station, goes to places connected to Joan of Arc, and passes by the big clock. Napoleon, Joan of Arc, Richard the Lionheart, and Henry the Lion have nothing to do with my Carey genealogy. Rollon, his son William Longsword, and his grandson Richard I, third Duke of Normandy, do.

Rollon(1)—————————————————————————Poppa(1)*

1st Duke of Normandy

^

Berenger, a Frank, was Count of Bayeux when the Viking Rollon arrived. Rollon killed Berenger, destroyed his castle, and kidnapped his daughter Poppa, who became the mother of his children. The name of Berenger’s wife is not known, but she was from Rennes, and their son was Count of Rennes, their grandson and great grandson were Dukes of Brittany, and their great great grandson, Juhael de Mayenne, was Count of Brittany. From the time of Juhael de Mayenne, the descendants are in England and Normandy. (See the chart below for these children and their wives.) The male line of these Carey’s goes back to Berenger, who was a Frank. (See his genealogy by clicking on Berenger below.)

This first video shows scenes around Fecamp, France. Rollon’s son, William Longsword, moved the capital from Rouen to Fecamp. Rollon was killed during the siege of Eu, France. His body was scattered by his enemies, and his grandson gathered his body together and buried it at Fecamp. His burial place is not marked but would most likely be buried inside the wall, parts of which remain. His femur was left to be buried in the cathedral at Rouen together with the heart of his son, William Longsword.

This second video of Fecamp shows more scenes of the town and the waterfront. Though having nothing to do with the Carey family history, Maupassant was from Fecamp.

Richard I(1)——————————————————–Gonnor de Crepon(1)-Danish

These four videos are of Lindholm Hoje , the largest viking graveyard in Scandinavia. It’s at Aalborg, Denmark. It’s not known who exactly is buried here. Gorm del Gamel, grandfather of Gonnor, is buried under the church at Jelling, Denmark, where the original runic stone is located also. The stone at Rouen is a copy of this one. (See the videos under Gorm del Gamel below.)

Gorm del Gamel is the first king of Denmark. This is the oldest kingdom in the world. These two videos show the church under which Gorm is buried. His burial spot is marked with a golden cross on the floor. His body was found here and was analyzed to verify that it was actually Gorm. It is thought he was originally buried in one of the Viking mounds located here. A burial chamber was found there. It is supposed his son took his body and buried it under the church after Gorm converted to Christianity. The church today is Protestant. The museum shows artifacts and pictures of the archaeological digs and surroundings.

Hedwig the great granddaughter of Rollon married Geoffrey the great grandson of Berenger bringing together the Norman line and the Frank line.

England

^

Juhael de Mayenne(1)(2)-Count of Brittany—————————–Agnes of Cornoueille

When the Anglo-Saxons invaded England, there were people there. They were the Celts. The Anglo-Saxons being more advanced in their military skills pushed the Celtic people to the sides, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Cornwall. One of the Celtic tribes in Cornwall was the Bretons. Some of the Breton people went across the channel and founded Brittany (Bretagne) in France. Berenger’s wife was from Rennes in Bretagne. She and their descendants would have been descendants of these Breton people. Some of the place names in England came from the Celts. For example, Castle Cary in Devonshire was named for the River Cary, which flows nearby. At the end of the video is the train ride out of Penzance toward Tiverton Station, and off to the side there is St. Michael’s Mount from Marazion, Cornwall, which is the English equivalent of Mont St. Michel on the French side.

Robert de Lovel(3)(4)(5)-Lord of Breherval=—————————-Hildeburge de Gallardon

                                                                     d’Ivry and Nogent-le-Rois

Sampford Peverell, Devon, England, is located not far from Castle Cary; and the words Breherval and Perceval being somewhat similar it’s likely they represent branches of the same family. The Norman (French) names and places have been Anglicized in England over the ages.

William Lovel(3)(4), founded or completed castle of Kary————-Maude de Beaumont (Devonshire, England)

This video takes you to the beginnings of the Carey name in England. The Castle Cary area was given to Juhael de Mayenne from Normandy/Brittany, France, by William the Conqueror; and the actual castle was built or completed by one of his descendants William Lovel. The name Carey began to be used by succeeding generations. The name of the castle came from the nearby River Cary. I asked the man at the train station if any Carey’s still lived in the area; and he said, “No.” However, a few days later I was in a nearby town Yate and came face-to-face with an ad on a building for the Carey brothers builders. I have the sign inserted at the end of the video. So there are still Carey’s living in the area.

Devonshire, England (Clovelly)

According to the plaque outside the churchyard, the Cary’s were lords of the manor at Clovelly at an early date. There are many memorials to them inside the church. This video shows some of them. There are others scattered around the church walls and floors. Some of these are of a period after our Cary’s had moved on to Somerset and Bristol. Of particular interest is the Cary coat of arms which is clearly shown on the memorials. The dove which is shown on the crest is the original Cary symbol. The three roses were added later. They were taken from a knight from Aragon who had come to England and challenged the English knights to a duel. One of the Cary’s took up the challenge. The fight lasted for days and was very brutal. People begged them to stop. Finally the Cary knight won and, as was the custom in those days, was allowed to take the defeated knight’s arms, the three roses. The roses have been a part of the Cary coat of arms ever since.

The following video, beginning with the countryside from Samford Preverel, England, to Barnstaple, is of the churchyard surrounding the church at Clovelly. It shows some of the monuments bearing the names of some other of our family lines Riley, Stevens, and Elliott. The Cary/Carey memorials are on the inside and are shown in the previous video.

John Carey was a draper from Bristol, England. He had two sons, John and Miles, who migrated to America. We descend from John who came to Plymouth, Massachusetts. Miles came to the Williamsburg, Virginia, area. In his will Miles mentioned that he had two houses that were to be sold. One was on Bellaume Street and the other was on St. Nicholas Street at Bristol, England. Both of these areas are on the video as they are today. Other people mentioned in the video are from the Stallings family history, not the Carey family history.
