Rollon

This video shows a statue of Rollon. Rollon was a Viking who was given what became Normandy, France, by the French king.  His father, Rognwald, was Count of Maere, Norway.  Several places in Norway claim to be the home of Rollon.  Maere, of course, does; but also so does Alesund, Norway, here where there is a park with this statue of Rollon.  The surrounding islands of Giske and Vigra also claim to have been his home.  He became the first Duke of Normandy, and his descendants became kings of England.  Queen Elizabeth of England is the present Duke of Normandy.  Here in Norway the focus is more on Harald Fairhair, who first united the country.  Rollon’s family was not the ruling family here.
